Indian Ocean Studies Embedded:  Co-creating Ways Ahead

An institutional network-building initiative to establish a concrete platform for collaborative research across the Indian Ocean region and beyond.

Who we are

A Collaborative Hub

Once dominated by historians, Indian Ocean Studies has become an interdisciplinary space. Our platform brings together anthropologists, literary critics, natural scientists, artists, and policy makers to facilitate meaningful conversations and shape research that is both innovative and applicable.

The International Consortium for Indian Ocean Studies (ICIOS) is a collaborative platform connecting institutions, researchers, artists, and community organisations across Africa, South Asia, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and the global north. We work to strengthen regional capacity, share knowledge, and build sustainable trans-oceanic partnerships.

We support collaborative research, public engagement, and regional capacity-building through training exchanges, digital knowledge access, and cross-disciplinary partnerships.

Our Approach

Our approach is inclusive and representative, with a strong element of capacity building for institutions in the region. We prioritize inclusivity, mutual respect, and sustainability, aiming to amplify and support the work our members are already doing rather than imposing extra burdens.

Our Objectives

  • Build south–south and south–north institutional collaboration

  • Foster ethical, inclusive, and sustainable knowledge production

  • Engage publics through arts, heritage, and civic partnerships

  • Support graduate students and early-career scholars

  • Develop shared digital archives and multilingual resources

Why It Matters

Indian Ocean Studies is expanding rapidly, yet resources and opportunities remain uneven. The International Consortium for Indian Ocean Studies builds an equitable and enduring infrastructure that centres regional voices, supports collaborative research, and strengthens the public impact of scholarship.
